Visiting Tara Theatre in Earlsfield
Tara Theatre a hidden Gem in Earlsfield South West London (Earlsfield)
" We make politically charged, innovative theatre, exploring the world through a South Asian lens."
Tara Theatre is a small theatre in Earlsfield, South West London. The theatre company was established in honour of Gurdip Singh Chaggar. The company aimed to showcase a blend of Eastern and Western cultures through their unique theatrical approach.
The group initially performed Sacrifice, a drama by Nobel Prize-winning poet Rabindranath, at the Battersea Arts Centre in 1977. Tara obtained their current theatre location in September 1983 and has used it as their in-house production base ever then.
In 2016, Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, unveiled the Tara Theatre, the UK's first multicultural theatre, following renovations. The Tara Theatre is also recognised as one of the leading multicultural theatre companies in the UK.
The term 'Tara' is equally significant to the theatre and its company. Tara's name, meaning'star' in Urdu, the Goddess of Love and Art in Buddhism, and the ancient seat of authority atop the Hill of Tara in Irish culture, was chosen to coincide with her goal. Tara's aim is to empower their company's stars via art and a message of love that transcends cultures.
Tara Theatre is a 100-seat tiny venue dedicated to creating inventive theatre through cross-cultural ties. The venue offers shows that align with this objective and aim to motivate you to take it forward.
